There's a great program targetting our area right now to install energy-efficient sink aerators, shower heads, light bulbs and door-sweeps. CCI's program is funded by a grant and is *free* and not restricted based on income, although I gather that some of the services they recommend may have income restrictions. [Highland Park] Swim Team Update

Clint Van Dusen came to the June Meeting representing the Highland Park Barracudas, a local swim team composed of children from East Liberty and Highland Park who swim at the Highland Park pool. Clint sought money to pay for team T-shirts, citing the fact that the team had none last year even though all of the other teams did. Clint arranged for Kress Shirts on Bryant Street to produce the shirts with a simple design. Several members of the club and community contributed money toward the shirts, and as a result, Clint was able to have 15 shirts printed. Clint said that Divehards International (a business owned by Highland Park residents) contributed generously. The swim meet was held on August 2nd. Unfortunately Clint does not know the final outcome, but the team did get their shirts. So what about next year? Well, the team's coach was one of the lifeguards laid off when the City closed most of its pools in early August. And Clint has been trying to convince the head lifeguard from the Highland Park pool to accompany him to ask for funding from Calvary Episcopal Church, but the remaining pool staff are uncertain whether the swim meet will even be held next year. If there is a meet next year, Clint says the team will need 40 shirts total (that's how many kids ended up on the team this year!), and Kress shirts told him that 40 shirts would cost $240. So if Clint is unable to get funding from his church, the team would need at least this much for shirts next year. If anyone would like to help Clint now (perhaps by talking with the head lifeguard at the Highland Park pool sometime this week on Clint's behalf, as he feels that having someone from Highland Park talk to them would strengthen his position), please call Clint at 412-xxx-xxxx. In the event that he is unable to get funding from his church in September or October, he will start looking for funds in May and would appreciate help (organizational as well as monetary) from the community. (The Saab was sold, and the seller was grateful that the ad went out, by the way.) I also asked whether we ought to include notices of special events going on outside Highland Park. The majority of the answers to this question were "yes", but many included the qualification that it be something out of the ordinary and with relevance to Highland Park. Finally, don't forget that this week is the last week of the summer that the Highland Park swimming pool will be open. The Learning Club provides individual and small group tutoring to children in general academic subjects; after-school and summer programming; and weekend project-based activities. The overriding philosophy of The Learning Club in Highland Park is that any child can learn at the level of his or her intellectual, social, and emotional continuum of development. Services at The Learning Club in Highland Park - The Enhanced Learning System is our learning support program for students falling behind, or students wishing to get ahead. From our intimate connection to your child's school, the use of technology at various steps of the learning process, and our use of a child's interests in determining resources procurement, our process is comprehensive. By triangulating the student's interests and needs to the resources of the center; applying the curriculum to state standards; building relationships with the child's school; and storing all of the information in several database modules, The Learning Club in Highland Park provides a service and a source of information that is currently unmatched by any organization in the Pittsburgh area. - Learning Clubs are multidisciplinary classes centered on topics of interests to youth. This summer, we offered The Book Club, The Math Club, and The 1600 Club (centered on vocabulary building, test, and study skills). Each club accommodates 10 students per session. The clubs are designed around Pittsburgh Public School standards, as well as linked to the National Standards in a variety of disciplines. Further, each project includes literacy, math, science, and technology. Participants are admitted into the clubs on a first-come, first-served basis. No headaches in our Math Club, where students become active consumers of math and learn through experience the meaning of numbers. Our most recent math club spent six weeks collecting data about customers at Tazza D'Oro. They interpreted the data and wrote a report for Amy, the owner. When: Saturday Mornings 1:00 until 3:00 Duration: Renews every six weeks. Every session covers the basics. Different projects each session. Cost: $75 per session THE YOUNG ARTIST'S CLUB (Starts September 27) Almost all children doodle. The Young Artist's Club is designed to take children at all levels of drawing to the next step. [Highland Park] Run for Literacy 5K

Come and see for yourself at the second annual "Run for Literacy 5K," benefiting Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. The event is September 14 beginning at 8:00 a.m. with pre-race stretching/yoga and will conclude in the early afternoon with the Pittsburgh Wellness Fair. PROBLEMS IN JULY - BE VIGILANT Two Highland Park residents wrote in July to report problems. Someone stole bikes from a garage in one incident, and someone was stealing cell phones and cameras when home owners walked in on him in the other incident. Let's all watch out for our neighbors. Report all suspicious activity to the police. Consider forming a block watch--contact Jan Stayianos of the HPCC for assistance. [Highland Park] HPCC Board of Directors Nominations

I am looking for recommendations for new HPCC Board members. I am looking for 5-10 people from the neighborhood who are interested in taking a leading role in the community activities that promote and enhance the quality of life in the Highland Park area. Any Board member should be willing to attend the 10 meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month (except July and December), be willing to discuss issues that come up, and to help out with HPCC activities. With the completion of the planning process of the Community Plan, it is now time to begin working on the recommendations that have been developed from the planning process. Please let me know of any neighbors or friends who will make a good HPCC Board member. Ideally, they should be nominated at the August meeting on the 21st, so they may be voted on at the annual meeting in September.
