Police Firing Range Update
Recently, I've heard from a few folks in the neighborhood who are concerned by the low-light shooting training occurring at the Police Training Rage on Washington Blvd. on February 9th, Commander Lando sent out a notice to the Community that low-light training sessions would be held as early as 6am and as late as 9:30pm between February 20th and April 12th. Since this training period began last week, a number of folks have expressed concerns about the training, in particular the broad range of dates during which it is scheduled to be taking place. In light of these concerns, I've spoken with Cristyn Zett, Commander of the Office of Professional Development for the Police Bureau. She explained that the long window for training is the result of an unexpected change in certification procedure, which is causing the entire police force to be run through this training all at once. She has agreed to attend the HPCC's March Community meeting (3/16, 7pm, St. Andrew's Church) to answer questions about the training program and discuss ways to reduce the noise impact on the community moving forward. In the meantime, Commander Zett has agreed to make some changes to the current training schedule that will place additional officers on the range in each session. This may result in making the training slightly louder in the short term, but assuming the weather cooperates, it should allow them to wrap up the training period sooner than the current April 12th end point. If you have questions or concerns about this issue, please plan to attend our March 16th Community Meeting; in the meantime, feel free to contact me. Best, Jake Pawlak HPCC President
