[Highland Park] how NOT to sell an item on the list serv
This is my second email, but the first was never posted as perhaps the moderators thought it was too strongly worded or targeted an individual too directly. Recently, I responded to an advertisement on the list serv for a large item. With kids in tow, I went to see the item and offered an amount which he said was the highest offered, and agreed to the sale. I asked if I could put down half and have my husband return for the item later (we needed hubby's larger vehicle). He agreed to hold the item for me, and we shook hands on the deal. When my husband arrived at his house later that evening, he waited half an hour for this person to show up, who then stated he had received a "better offer" and demanded more money if my husband wanted the item. The item, which was promised to my toddler, was needless to say not purchased. Our deposit was returned, but my child was crushed. Neighbors: If you are selling an item (especially something large which requires later pickup), and you take money from the person and shake on the deal, you have SOLD your item. Demanding more money upon pick up is rude and unethical, and not a way to do business with your fellow Highland Parkers. I think most of us know that but apparently others need a reminder. I hope that this person's alleged other buyer never came to get the item. If he did, I hope a lousy few more dollars was worth it to him to make a little child sad. Please use courtesy and integrity when selling on the list serv.
