[Highland Park] Highland Park Architecture of Frederick Schiebler Jr
Many Highland Park residents are fans of the progressive architecture of Frederick Schiebler, Jr, not least for singular houses on Beverly Place and Jackson Street in addition to his well-known works around the east end. This week is an opportunity to see two of Schiebler’s other works in our historic neighborhood. The blue apartment house on the 900 block of Mellon Street is undergoing alteration. The massive poured concrete shell is being peeled back for the first time in its 105 years. Its lack of exterior ornamentation was so uncommon for 1904 -- remember that many of the stately four square homes were still going up -- that it was labeled the world’s most abstract residence. Giant steel I beams above the broad porches and windows are exposed for the first time in living memory. As Schiebler’s style progressed, exposing steel I beams in buildings like his renowned Old Heidleberg came to be his personal trademark. On the 6000 block of Saint Marie Street, Schiebler updated a modest old wooden frame house and lived here for a while. The house has been in poor repair for more than a decade. Its current owners are removing the rot to make it livable again, and in the process, stripping many exterior decorative details that Schiebler had added 9 decades ago. Some details will remain. There is a brief window to drive past and have a last look before it is altered.
