I've had 14 responses to my recent post on Cedar Waxwings--a lot of Highland Park folks love their wild birds! Apparently, Cedar Waxwings are not all that rare around here, especially nearer the park and when berries are available. A few people remarked on large gatherings feasting on berries near the reservoir. The "hot" bird right now is the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. There were 3 sightings in neighborhood yards. Other less-common birds noted were Baltimore Orioles, Carolina Wrens, a Pileated Woodpecker in the Park, and a Red-Breasted Nuthatch (a good deal smaller than the more common White-Breasted variety.) I don't do social media, so I don't know if there is an easy way for Highland Park birders to share their information. Maybe the Highland Park list-serve could serve that purpose. If people would e-mail me their observations, I could compile them every few weeks and post it on the list. I'd like to broaden the scope and include other aspects of backyard nature as well. Please let me know if you think this is a good idea.
