[Highland Park] Re: Burglary on Callowhill
I live on Callowhill too. On a Tuesday a couple of weeks ago, I was leaving for work around noon and two men I had never seen before were standing in front of my secure building. They were looking around, and maybe I'm paranoid, but I thought I heard them discussing how they could get inside. As I left (and shut the locking door behind me) , they came up on the porch and stared into the apartment of the a girl who lives there, who never shuts her window or her curtains. Situations like this are awkward, because when you don't know everyone who lives in your building, you don't want to call police on random neighbors. But there was an SUV I hadn't seen before parked out front, and I know I haven't seen these particular men before or since. The whole situation felt weird, so I ended up calling 911 as I was leaving. I work long hours and never see my neighbors, so I don't know what happened. But, I wonder if this could be related? Our house on Callowhill was broken into yesterday (we were at work all day and no one saw anything, so it's difficult to pin down the time). They used wood from a neighbor's construction work to climb up to our second floor and get in through an open window.
Most of the items they took can be replaced (laptop, stereos, xbox, camera, ipod, dvd's, etc.), but they also stole several pieces of heirloom jewelry, and my boyfriend's passport and social security card.
The police and crime investigators were very helpful, but it is still important to keep your eyes open and windows locked, even if you think the windows are not easily accessible!!! And, of course, if you see anyone running around the neighborhood with pillowcases full of stereo equipment (yes, they took a few pillowcases to make off with their haul), feel free to call the police and email me :)
Thank you!

UP item of the week: YOUTH BARISTA PROGRAM – FREE COFFEE AND DESSERT RECEPTION Join us Friday October 5th from 6-8pm, during Penn Avenues' Unblurred for a free coffee and dessert reception and the official introduction of the Youth Barista Program to our community. We will be serving FREE coffee drinks from our beautiful newly constructed coffee bar in our Great Hall with live musical entertainment and a pottery seconds sale. The Union Project is proud to announce a partnership with Starbucks for our new Youth Barista Program, an onsite skills training program for young adults. Over the coming year this program will train 30 young men and women aging out of foster care. Forty percent of foster youth end up homeless in their first 2 years out of the system. This program works to change that number locally by providing youth with skills and job placements in café and food service, allowing them to earn a living wage.
