ACCLAIMED ACOUSTIC GUITARISTS TO PERFORM AT CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER
Concert to benefit Science Center, local Sierra Club
PITTSBURGH - Three renowned acoustic guitarists will perform at a concert titled An Acoustic Evening on Friday, March 12, at Carnegie Science Center. Proceeds from the concert will benefit environmental education programs for the Science Center and the Allegheny Sierra Club’s Water Committee, making it possible for more students from underserved schools and neighborhoods to participate, become inspired, and learn about career opportunities for their future.
A pre-concert reception beginning at 7 pm will feature food by Sausalido, a bistro in Bloomfield, along with beer, wine, and soft drinks. The concert begins at 8 pm.
Guitarists Ken Bonfield, Steve Davison, and Tim Farrell will play exquisite guitar music ranging from country, blues, ragtime, and folk, to traditional Celtic, jazz, classical, contemporary, and even a couple of rock covers. “Acoustic guitar fans know that having these three distinguished musicians appear together is a rare event,” says Linda Ortenzo, director of the Science Center’s Regional SciTech Initiative. “We are thrilled to present this unique program with the Allegheny Sierra Club to raise awareness and funds to fulfill our shared educational goals and commitment to our community.”
Ken Bonfield has performed with such talented artists as Michael Manring, Teja Gerken, Larry Allen Brown, Brooks Williams, and Dakota Dave Hull. He and Steve Davison have been featured performers at such venues as Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the nation’s oldest continuously operating coffee house; Club Passim in Cambridge, Mass; Eddie's Attic in Atlanta; the Kent State Folk Festival; and the Montreal Guitar Show, among many others.
Tim Farrell has written many works for the guitar, both as a solo instrument and with other instruments. He has played with Yes keyboard legend Rick Wakeman and has provided the music for Multimedia Presentations, television and radio shows, soundtracks, and interactive theater productions. He serves on the faculty of the Community Conservatory in Doylestown, Pa., where he is also the artistic director of the Stretched Strings Concert and Workshop Series.
After the concert, the musicians will autograph and sell their CDs.
“It is wonderful to be able to partner with Carnegie Science Center to bring more science education opportunities to students from around the region,” says Stephanie N. Simmons, Water Chair, Allegheny Group, Sierra Club. “ Improving their access to science helps hone the next generation of conservatonists, earth scientists, and sustainability experts.”
In addition, it has been confirmed that Flir Thermal Imaging will bring their Mobile Training Unit to the event. The mobile RV carries a variety of Flir’s cameras used in water, gas and infrastructure inspection, surveillance, and by emergency services personnel. Guests will be able to visit the MTU in groups of 12, and try out some of the life-saving equipment.
Tickets cost $60 each, including food and one drink ticket for the pre-show reception, and can be purchased at
