[Highland Park] THIS WEEK: "GIFT TO AMERICA" performs
Dear Highland Parkers, This week "GIFT TO AMERICA" will perform at Millvale's St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church, celebrating Pittsburgh's art treasure housed there. "GIFT TO AMERICA" is a one-hour dramatic interpretation of the genesis and creation of the emotionally evocative "Millvale Murals" by Croatian artist Maxo Vanka. When asked in 1937 by Father Albert Zagar to create a series of paintings for the walls of St. Nicholas Church, Vanka, a recent emigre deeply grateful to his adopted homeland, transformed the work into his own highly personal "Gift To America" -- a heart-stopping visual testament to faith, people and country. The performance dialogue, written by Dr. David Demarest was originally staged in 1981 and again to sold-out audiences in 2008. The production is directed by Geoffrey Hitch of Highland Park.
