To kick off the holiday season, the HPCC organized its third annual food drive for seniors. With donations from the community, the HPCC provided 120 “Thanksgiving trimmings” baskets to seniors served by Vintage. They received the trimmings during Vintage’s Thanksgiving party when they also received turkeys. Thank you to everyone who helped make this holiday a little easier for some of our neighbors. A special shout out to Kate, Jack, Diane, Judy, Andrea, Annie and Jim for your generosity - you are angels! “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill () During these harried and often troubling times, it’s important to make the time and space to care for both ourselves and others. Lower your expectations about the holidays - perfection isn’t possible so don’t even try. Instead of baking that extra pie or making yourself crazy decorating and buying gifts, take some deep breaths, a hot bath or a long walk. What you do will be plenty and enough. And keep posted as the HPCC will be posting information about opportunities to help others in need in the community this season. Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday, Stephanie Walsh HPCC President ** ‘Tis the Season! ------------------------------------------------------------ Mark your calendars for Light Up Night: Dec. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. Keep an eye on the HPCC website (https://hpccpgh.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed770e831682d049448ee942c&id=c4210e1b00&e=eb0bdabb3c) for maps showing where you can find the best lights in the neighborhood and which businesses will have specials. ** Thank you, Rob! ------------------------------------------------------------ A special thank you to Rob Collins, owner of the Bryant Street Market, for sponsoring the Bryant Street Parklet for a second year. His support helps make this lovely community space possible, so be sure to drop by the market, pick up some Millie’s and give him a big thank you! This year’s Halloween Parade was a smashing success! More than 100 little goblins made it to the park for the fun, food and games. Thank you to Children’s Committee members Elisa Luke Jones and Laurie Hanniford for making it happen! This invasive species poses a major threat to crops as well as to the ornamental plants in the beautiful gardens of Highland Park. The Highland Park Garden Club has compiled useful information and resources (https://hpccpgh.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed770e831682d049448ee942c&id=eeb561b293&e=eb0bdabb3c) for how to spot and do your part in helping to eradicate this harmful pest. ** Consult the HPCC Dictionary ------------------------------------------------------------ Do you know your HPCC from your HPCDC from your HPGC? We’ve started compiling a list of acronyms and references commonly heard in the neighborhood. Test your knowledge — and let us know (mailto:hpcceditor@gmail.com?subject=The%20HPCC%20dictionary&body=null) what we missed! ** News from St. Andrew’s ------------------------------------------------------------ A service of Advent Lessons and Carols will be held on Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. Children are invited to participate in Advent crafts during the service. There will be bagpipes to celebrate St. Andrew and a festive reception to follow the service. Christmas Eve services will be held at 4 p.m., 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. The Children of St. Andrew’s will be hosting a Christmas Pageant at the 4 p.m. service. A Christmas Day service will be held at 10 a.m. Also, St. Andrew’s is teaming up with Hello, Neighbor again this December to collect much needed items. Please look for future announcements regarding what will be collected and how you can participate. A special thank you to the students at the Neighborhood Academy who recently helped to rake leaves and beautify the grounds as a part of their day of service.
