[Highland Park] Car break-ins
It really disturbs me that anyone would ever: 1) leave their car unlocked and/or 2) leave valuables inside their car I'm beginning to think that our neighborhood must have a reputation as an "easy target" among criminals everywhere. Being aware of suspicious behavior and promptly calling the police when a theft occurs should certainly help, but our number one priority should be to stop making it so easy for would-be thieves. If it means checking your car door when you leave to make sure that it's locked and doing a quick visual sweep to make sure you're not leaving anything behind, then that is what we should all be doing. And when this current crime wave ends, we can't let down our vigilance or it will surely return, to the detriment of ourselves and all of our neighbors. So let's help each other by doing our best to secure our neighborhood. I agree, but what further troubles me is that there are so many car and house break- ins and yet no one leaves there porch lights on at night. I know that's not the answer, but since there are so many break ins wouldn't it help us and our neighbors by leaving the porch light on so that "IF" there is some ruckus outside "MAYBE" we as neighbors can look out and SEE whats going on! So many times at night, I notice no one keeps there porch lights on. Wouldn't it help to see if someone's hiding in the shadows, to see the extra foot prints in the snow, to even make it appear like someone is home? Anyone could be waiting and watching from in between the houses, the porch lights may help to eliminate their hiding spaces. These are just helpful thoughts not at all solutions.

Being a resident of Highland Park for only a couple of years, I appreciate that people are alerting neighbors of break-ins and such. However, when I KEPT reading that people were leaving cars unlocked and items inside (whether "valuable" or not), I pretty much began ignoring the postings altogether. It's like nobody's paying attention. Understand, that I am NOT talking about home invasions. I've seen people suggest being "watchful neighbors" and calling the police immediately, etc. However, what about your OWN responsibility? Break-ins may happen, but do you have to make it easy?? Why should your neighbors be expected to keep an eye out when you don't even take reasonable precautions yourselves? Police time and resources are already limited and would be better used NOT having to come here and investigate something that they can virtually do nothing about, AND that could have been EASILY avoided. Crime exists, even in the best communities. You don't have to live in a fortress (unless you want to), but some common sense and less naivety are also good defenses. Alycia

On our block cars were broken into that were locked and nothing was visable. The locks were pried out of their "socket" or the windows were smashed. The glove boxes were rifled but there was nothing to take. Someone or some group seems to be casing all of HP each evening and has been for about 2 years. We are disgusted and contemplating moving out of the city. -----Original Message----- From: Roberta Shope <RobertaShope@howardhanna.com> To: neighborhood@highlandparkpa.com Sent: Mon, Jan 25, 2010 9:55 am Subject: [Highland Park] Car break-ins It really disturbs me that anyone would ever: 1) leave their car unlocked and/or 2) leave valuables inside their car I'm beginning to think that our neighborhood must have a reputation as n "easy target" among criminals everywhere. I've read that statistically, leaving the porch light on makes a big difference regarding crime. Motion sensors or photo sensors (come on whenever it is dark) are additional options for outdoor lights. My own locked car was broken into several years ago - the thieves stole my inspection stickers, and in the process messed up my driver side door (it has never been quite the same since) and cracked my windshield. Getting the stickers replaced was also not easy - the garage initially charged me a full inspection price and only later refunded the extra charges. At the time, the officer thanked me for reporting it, said there had been a pattern of such thefts, and that the investigation was ongoing. So, I can certainly empathize with my fellow crime victims, and I know that such crimes are not always preventable, no matter what we do. We just need to take reasonable precautions and do what we can, which includes reporting it to the police promptly. As a point of information: four compact fluorescent bulbs will operate for an hour for about a penny's worth of electricity. Bill Ghrist On 1/25/2010 6:56 PM, Jessica Miller wrote:

The police need to increase patrols to make these crooks a little less cocky. -----Original Message----- From: mlr5813@aol.com Date: Mon, 25 Jan 2010 18:26:18 To: <RobertaShope@howardhanna.com>; <neighborhood@highlandparkpa.com> Subject: Re: [Highland Park] Car break-ins -- <http://lists.highlandparkpa.com/mailman/listinfo/neighborhood>
A few years back, I was assigned to Zone Four Station and there was a similar problem of thefts of inspection stickers from parked vehicles. Zone Four did directed patrols and undercover patrols in order to catch the thief in the act although most thefts. However, most occurred at night under the cover of darkness and were difficult to detect unless a porch light or street light was on nearby. The reports really made a difference in identifying patterns and identifying the serial numbers from the inspection stickers. The investigation eventually lead to the arrest and prosecution of a suspect.
