[Highland Park] Giving away free items
Dear Highland Park community, I would like to tell you about a wonderful site that I found if you a.. are concerned about the environment and keeping items out of the landfill b.. want to declutter c.. don't like to throw things away that are still usuable d.. are looking for hard to find items It's called freecycle.org, and it is a yahoo group you must join. The way it works is that you post your junk, and people who want it come take it away! Or you can post a "Wanted" and someone might have one. It's great! I have been able to get rid of a lot of things that are not good enough for Goodwill, but someone out there has wanted them. Just to jump in... you will get a *lot* of mail, so be sure to set up a filter and use a mailbox w/plenty of space (or empty often.) But ITA that it's an awesome program, and it's national (at the least) so tell others to join, too. I get, and then re-freecycle, most of the kids' clothes this way. I'd also add "e" to Sherry's list: It's great if you only need things briefly (like little kid clothes, which are outgrown in a few months) and don't want to invest a lot of cash or add to the demand for semi-durable goods (ex - sweatshop-made clothes and furniture that really *do* fall apart in 3 months!) Take the items from others, use them while you need them, and then re-freecycle to the next person. It's great if, like me, you'd rather actually see things used up and worn out. There's something satisfying about getting the last ounce of life out of something before it's discarded. If you can relate, you must join :) I've seen a *lot* of Highland Park folks on the Pittsburgh group... Yay us! Leslie Ps - I changed the subject line bcs "free" tripped my junk filters and I almost didn't see it... didn't want this thread lost for others. -----Original Message----- From: neighborhood-bounces@highlandpark.pgh.pa.us [mailto:neighborhood-bounces@highlandpark.pgh.pa.us] On Behalf Of Sherry Goldman Sent: Saturday, January 07, 2006 12:46 PM To: neighborhood@highlandpark.pgh.pa.us Subject: [Highland Park] Giving away free items Dear Highland Park community, I would like to tell you about a wonderful site that I found if you a.. are concerned about the environment and keeping items out of the landfill b.. want to declutter c.. don't like to throw things away that are still usuable d.. are looking for hard to find items It's called freecycle.org, and it is a yahoo group you must join.
