[Highland Park] Fw: RE: Question About Vaccines
Below is my e-mail dialogue with the CDC regarding vaccine information. They have given links to the sheets (VIS) which are by federal law (a requirement of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986) supposed to be given out with vaccines (further below), as well as links to find all vaccine ingredients and possible interaction complications, etc. Jessica --- On Tue, 11/3/09, CDC-INFO <CDCINFO@cdc.gov> wrote: From: CDC-INFO <CDCINFO@cdc.gov> Subject: RE: Question About Vaccines To: kekikamiller@yahoo.com Date: Tuesday, November 3, 2009, 1:48 PM Thank you for your additional inquiry to CDC-INFO. In response to your request for further information on the ingredients in the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine, we are pleased to provide you with the following information. The National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases provides a list of vaccine additives. Vaccine ingredients can be viewed and sorted by ingredient or by individual vaccine. This information is available online at: Ingredients in Vaccines: Fact Sheet http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/additives.htm The Reference Materials section of the website contains a PDF link to the various ingredients and tells you which vaccines contain them; while the second PDF link lists the various vaccines and their corresponding ingredients. While it may be more convenient to use the above online information, package inserts may have more up-to-date information on a vaccine. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist will be able to provide you with a copy of the H1N1 vaccine package insert when it becomes available. The package insert lists all of the ingredients in the vaccine. It also provides information about any known adverse reactions. Package inserts are also available for viewing from the Institute for Vaccine Safety at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Institute's website is: Institute for Vaccine Safety http://www.vaccinesafety.edu/package_inserts.htm#Top For further information, please visit these websites: CDC: Vaccines and Immunizations http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/ HHS Purchases Additional H1N1 Vaccine Ingredients http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2009pres/07/20090713b.html Additional information on the 2009 H1N1 vaccine is also available from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I am pleased about the law about the information sheets being given out, and hope there is someone enforcing it. I am still having trouble finding information listing all of the ingredients in particular vaccines. I looked at several of the links you gave and could not find that. In response to your request for information on vaccine VIS, we are pleased to provide you with the following information. VISs (Vaccine Information Statements) can be viewed and downloaded from the CDC Vaccines and Immunization website. Every time one of these vaccines is given regardless of what combination it is given in regardless of whether it is given by a public health clinic or a private provider regardless of how the vaccine was purchased regardless of the age of the recipient the appropriate VIS must be given out at the time of the vaccination. This information from the CDC website can be found at the following location: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/vis-facts.htm#faq Until you are able to get vaccinated, the best way to help fight 2009 H1N1 influenza (flu) is to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue away. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Stay home if you're sick, and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. I even heard the vaccine info sheets are supposed to be given out by law every time someone receives a vaccine. I have never even seen a vaccine info sheet and am wondering if you can do anything to make sure they are given out. Jessica Miller
