LAFORET CALL-IN ACTION DAY: THIS FRIDAY! This Friday, September 16th, Voices for Animals is holding its first Call-In Day of Action against Laforet and their continuing sale of foie gras. Laforet, a French restaurant in Highland Park, has been our most stubborn holdout of the Foie Gras-Free Pittsburgh campaign: they not only refuse to stop selling foie gras, they also refuse to even meet with us or speak to us. Not only that, Laforet may also be one of the citys biggest sellers of foie gras-on one recent menu, foie gras was listed in four separate dishes! We have been campaigning against them for quite some time now and have decided that we need to use tactics a bit more persuasive to try to get through to them. Therefore, we are proclaiming a national call-in day against Laforet. We would like everyone to call Laforet on Friday, September 16th between their business hours of 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM. The owners and managers of Laforet are Michael and Robert Uricchio. Tell them to finally do the right thing and to stop selling foie gras permanently. Laforet: (412) 665-9000 A few talking points: · Foie gras production is one of the cruelest forms of factory farming. To produce it, ducks and geese are force fed a third of their body weight in food each day until their livers become grossly engorged up to ten times their normal size. This creates a serious and painful liver disease. · Undercover investigations of foie gras farms have revealed the most deplorable of conditions. Ducks are kept in such tight confinement that little room is allowed for any movement at all, and the ducks are denied any water to swim in. Severely sick and dying birds were found everywhere-many suffering from conditions caused by force feeding such as their stomachs bursting from being overstuffed with food. · The forced feeding wreaks havoc on these birds bodies. Ducks rescued from foie gras farms found them in such poor shape that they could barely even stand up, let alone walk. In fact, the science of foie gras production aims to slaughter the birds right before they would otherwise die from forced feeding induced conditions. · Over 12 countries have already realized the inherent cruelty of foie gras production and have banned it. In the United States, California passed legislation to illegalize the production and sale of foie gras in the state and several other states have similar legislation pending. Restaurants all over the country are removing foie gras from their menus, including 10 here in Pittsburgh. · Dont let Laforet hand you excuses such as foie gras isnt currently on their menu. While their menu does change frequently, if it is not on the current menu chances are good it will be listed on future menus (and likely more than once). Besides, even if they only sold it once a year, that is still one time too many. Tell them you want a permanent commitment to no longer sell foie gras. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and I completely understand the objections many people have to the creation and serving of foie gras. That being said, though, I would like to express my support and appreciation for Laforet. I feel fortunate to have them as one of our Highland Park businesses, as the quality of their food and service is well known even outside of Pittsburgh.
Not only that, Laforet may also be one of the city's biggest sellers of foie gras-on one recent menu, foie gras was listed in four separate dishes!

A few talking points:
· Foie gras production is one of the cruelest forms of factory farming.
· The forced feeding wreaks havoc on these birds' bodies.
· Don't let Laforet hand you excuses such as foie gras isn't currently on their menu. While their menu does change frequently, if it is not on the current menu chances are good it will be listed on future menus (and likely more than once). Besides, even if they only sold it once a year, that is still one time too many. Tell them you want a permanent commitment to no longer sell foie gras.

Hello Neighbors, Before I put the message thru to the email list this morning concerning the sale of foie gras at Laforet, I debated whether it was appropriate. The message was submitted by someone from Highland Park, and concerned Highland Park, so I put it thru. Several messages were sent in reponse to this but I am not going to be putting them all thru. If you have a comment/response about the issue, please respond directly to the sender of the original message. Thanks Bob
