[Highland Park] ice removal suggestions
Dear all: First of all, thanks to all of you who replied to me so promptly with suggestions about ice removal from our gutter and roof. Since I also received many requests from others with the same problem as me, I'm posting all the suggestions and recommendations I have received so far. If anyone has other recommendations, please post to the entire list because just a look around the neighborhood shows that many of us are in the same situation with our roofs. The list is below. Thanks again for everyone's help. I did find someone who is coming to look at our roof tomorrow. Meanwhile the warmer temperature seems to have reduced the leak quite a bit. Neepa Majumdar ---------- 1) The only suggestion I received from multiple people is here and also in the attachment: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/skill-builder/0,,211604,00.html 2) Paul Earnst 412-312-0714. I'd call him today, he's working on another roof with the same problem in highland park. He's my contractor and has dealt with 4 roofs for me this week. 3) Use calcium salt on the roof, it won't damage the shingles. Use some sort of heater on the gutters. 4) Ken Schneider. He is a very nice, reliable guy. 412-366-9050 5) You may want to consider placing these calcium chloride socks on your roof to reduce any further damage as indicated in the attachment. I have personally placed about 10 on my own roof and it does work. Depending on the height of your roof, you may want to have a contractor place the calcium chloride socks. You can purchase the calcium chloride pellets at Houston Starr in Wilkinsburg located at 300 Brushton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15217, 412-242-6000. I would call them to be sure they still have the calcium chloride pellets. You can purchase panty hose at the dollar store on Penn Ave. where you turn onto Brushton Ave. to go to Houston Starr. 6) Servicemaster is oakmont i-- they do water damage work and work with insurance companies 412 826-1010. John Samek is the owner. 7) Vinegar is supposed to melt ice. I've heard to use a 3 parts vinegar 1 part water solution and spray it on. 8) While urging CAUTION, one neighbor describes his solution to ice in box gutters: We've been having a problem with leaking box gutters. I was able to climb in behind the "knee-wall" of the sloping roof to assess the situation. It appears our leaks are more from nail holes at the top of the gutter than from water getting under the shingles. I drilled some strategic drain holes in the bottom of the box, which helps a lot except when the holes plug with ice. (I'll need to cover these holes with mesh to keep bees out in the spring.) I also hammered in some wooden dams to direct the water to the drain holes. Also, I can access the gutter from the outside through a third floor window and have been able to make a channel through the ice dam on the lip of the gutter so water can drain out to some extent . I hope these ideas are of some help, although your situation might be quite different. 9) my name is Robert and i work with several homeowners and investors in the city of pittsburgh and i also live in the highland park area i would be glad to handle this snow/ ice problem that you have please feel free to contact me: Robert Higgs Uplife Financial Solutions 412-758-3306 10) Kress Brothers - 724-443-2850 11) Schauffner - 412-767-5180 12) Mark Bozzo - 412-480-2905 13) OCEAN BREEZE 412-805-5602
