[Highland Park] More incidents!
Hi all, I've lived in Highland Park for about 6 years. Up until about last Fall, I've enjoyed a relatively quite and peaceful life here. Last fall started a string of incidents that have been both nuisances and criminal. Kids have taken fall decorations from my porch and ripped off winter lights. Over the Winter, some one threw bricks and a paint can into my new pool, destroying the winter cover and ruining the liner. My roommate's car was broken into recently and my neighbors car was stolen. I'm sure it's the same group of kids who have no regard for other peoples property or respect for authority. I've installed more lighting and am planning on getting a camera system to hopefully catch these thugs in the act. The previous writer was also correct in the advise of not leaving anything of value in your cars and keeping them locked, even in your driveway or garage. I truly believe if my roommate had used her club, her car wouldn't have been broken into. Finally, get involved in the community group and/or a block watch. I plan to!!! Thanks for letting me vent. Hello Neighbors, the kids out of school, we can only expect incidents to increase. As Public Safety Chair of the HPCC, I propose that we have a meeting of all interested neighbors in Highland Park. I can invite a police representative, we can discuss ideas of how to prevent vandalism, and how to combat these incidents through community involvement, block watches, and other means. I ask anyone who is interested to send me an email at JCiroli@yahoo.com Once I assess interest, I will acquire a venue that will accommodate the group. Hi John, The recently completed Highland Park Community Plan (www.highlandparkcommunity.com) addressed the very important issue of public safety at length. Perhaps it can be used as one way to frame the discussion of policy responses to increased concerns about public safety. For example, block watches were one strategy recommended by the community plan--but there is some concern, legitimate, I think, about the efficacy of this strategy and the workload burdens it might place on neighbors. Anyway, I appreciate your initiative and look forward to attending the meeting. Michael Johnson
