Jan 31: "Tear Open the Heavens: Race, Violence, and Faith in Our Times"
Neighbors - Greetings from the seminary! On Jan 31, we will have the privilege of hosting Grawemeyer Award winner Willie James Jennings. Jennings, associate professor of theology and black church studies at Duke Divinity School. Jennings just received the $100,000 Grawemeyer prize for his work on race and Christianity and will keynote an afternoon-long event here at the seminary on Saturday. As communities struggle to respond with hope and proaction to institutionalized racial violence, this event provides an opportunity to link faith communities to the work ahead. (Remember, MLK Jr was a pastor first, and the civil rights movement was born in the black church.) We invite you to one, two, or all of the events - a lecture, group conversation, a meal, and a worship service. *The event is free and open to the public.* All we ask is that you call 412 924 1345 to RSVP for the dinner, since we have limited space for that part of the day. For more information, follow this link: http://www.pts.edu/jennings_2015 Jennings is an extraordinarily gifted and passionate speaker, teacher, and thought leader. Together with my cosponsoring colleagues at Pittsburgh Mennonite Church and Union Baptist Church of Swissvale, hope to see you there.
