[Highland Park] Lamp re-wire? Thanks!!
Dear Neighbors, First, I would like to thank everyone who responded to my inquiry last week about having a lamp re-wired. As always, HP Neighbors always comes through with great suggestions! I have compiled the responses here, for everyone’s reference; • Rolliers Hardware in Mt Lebanon can do this. Their prices are very reasonable. • Guiding Light in Oakmont. Used to be in East Liberty. • There is a repair shop in Squirrel Hill that repairs lamps for $16 per lamp. It's on Murray ave on the next block towards Greenfield from the Giant Eagle. It is in the same block and on the same side of the street as the Tea Cafe. • I had some lighting work done at Typhoon in regent square and was pleased with them. and finally for the adventuresome... • Lamps are actually fun to take apart and to reassemble. Take your time, use new parts, and the rest is just learning. Realistically, having a lamp reworked runs about a hundred dollars so do it yourself is the answer. Start with a 12 or 15 extension cord from Home Depot. Clip off the end where you plus things in and just retain the plug in end with the full cord. Purchase a new socket (remove the old one and take it with you) but I always like to upgrade to three way switches. Even if you just use a single bulb the lamp has the capacity to use a three way bulb. Purchase some black electrical tape and you are on the way to a simple and fun solution. A wire stripper tool (about ten bucks) is the perfect tool to purchase and keep for all of your future lamp projects. There are lots of home websites that give the details plus photos to assist your new hobby. • Lastly, I had a neighborhood person mention that he would be able to re-wire lamps as well, but I did not want to put out contact info out without that persons permission, so if anyone is interested in that possibility, email me and I will pass your information along to said person. —tazio Thanks again!
