[Highland Park] donation ideas...
In response to recent inquiries: maternity, children's, and baby items can be donated to local women's shelters: Women's Center and Shelter 412.687.8008 (these numbers are all hotlines - the only numbers they publish) Alle Kiski Area HOPE Center 724.224.4673 Crisis Center North 412.364.5556 Womansplace 412.678.4616 In general, adult used clothing that is clean and in decent condition (including shoes and coats!!) - can be donated to our local hospital emergency rooms. I am a clinical social worker at Presby and we keep a small clothing closet of donated items in our emergency department, mostly donated by us social workers - we never have enough clothing for larger men and women. Our patients are not missy size 10s - they are sick, injured, bloated, and usually large - but we have a closet full of sizes 8 and 10!! We can always use larger stretchy items, sweats and tees, coats for in winter, and shoes. Many of our patients have their clothing or jammies cut off of them in the emergency department and have nothing to wear at discharge, no family to pick them up or bring clothes. Many patients are homeless, or otherwise quite indigent. I have sent a heartbreaking number of patients home in hospital gowns and hospital slipper-socks with a donated cab ride. Donation Centers will sell your used items to support their mission, which is absolutely marvelous. But I can assure you that we will put your clothes right on the backs of people who have none. I would imagine that the Children's Hospital emergency department also accepts donations. Many thanks!!
