door-to-door magazine scam
Hi all - I wanted to report an experience I had this afternoon at my home on Grafton Street. Around 6pm, a young man (20's-ish) with a nametag that said "Ricardo" knocked on the door and said he was selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door to fund his education as a motivational speaker. He said he'd come by the house earlier, that my husband had promised him a subscription, and that all I had to do was sign for it. I asked to see a business card and he said my husband already had it, so I said I wasn't comfortable signing for anything and I'd get his card from my husband when he came home. You can probably guess that my husband had neither gotten his business card nor promised a subscription; in fact, he had told Ricardo he wasn't interested. Ricardo made his first visit last Friday, May 16, and apparently decided to make another round today. I obviously don't know his story, or why he chose to make a repeat visit to our house when my husband wasn't there and lie to me. I'm concerned, and I'd definitely be curious to hear if anyone else knows more. take care all, Lauren
Yes, the group is making the rounds. A young woman was going door to door on Chislett today. She boldly told me--and showed me on her sign-up sheet--that my two next door neighbors/friends had given her points (ie, purchased magazines). The young woman was articulate, funny, and had a well-thought through pitch. Alas, it is a scam. 1) My neighbors did not give her points/buy anything. 2) A quick google search of the company/organization, reveals a Better Business rating of F. A consummate salesperson? Yes. A scam? Yes. Dawn
