[Highland Park] NatureLABcommunity set to sprout this spring in Pittsburgh
NatureLABcommunity: at the nexus of science, entrepreneurship, and community. Education Innovations, Inc. would like to announce the NatureLABcommunity program. Following is information about NatureLABcommunity, request for proposals for portions of the project, volunteer opportunities for individuals and corporations, and information on how you can share in the NatureLABcommunity vision by purchasing a brick. BACKGROUND Education Innovations, Inc. is working to turn a 26,000 square foot vacant lot in Uptown into a premier regional science classroom called NatureLABcommunity. Hosting children K-12 on a year-round basis for science activities during-school, after school, weekends, and during the summer, NatureLABcommunity will also be center for entrepreneurship incubation, workforce development, and community gathering. NatureLABcommunity will feature 2 greenhouses, a learning pavilion walled with reused shipping container classrooms, a performance space, and a working mini-farm. Keep a look out for Maries pumpkin patch next fall. We look forward to breaking ground in late spring as we construct the first greenhouse, as well as import 30 tons of soil to get the site ready for its first growing season. We will host 25 low-income students this summer for an 8-week summer camp focused on energyits forms, sources, uses, and implications to humans and the environment. We will also accommodate 25 non-scholarship students from all over Allegheny County. Students will animate the existing flower mural with solar energy, build a water entrapment system for irrigation, and work on a plan to make the NatureLAB 75% solar energy dependent. NatureLABcommunity will also host Saturday gatherings that will feature music, science activities, and the food grown on-site. REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS/VOLUNTEERS We are looking for several volunteers/bids for aspects of our NatureLABcommunity project to get ready for summer learning: Bricklayer to install a brick patio and walkways Brick Inscriber to inscribe 200 300 bricks Excavator to level ground for construction of greenhouse Brick Seller - make NatureLAB a reality by purchasing a brick and selling a brick to a friend or family member. Dietician to partner with us on a General Mills grant proposal VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Data Entry. Compile a 2,000 strong mailing list to be used in conjunction with a fundraiser with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This concert will feature Dionne Warwick. Education Innovations, Inc. gets 100% of all the profits from the tickets we sell! Well host a ticket purchase event at Tazza Doro soon. NatureLAB Lemonade Crew. Raise awareness and money for NatureLABcommunity by selling fresh lemonade at community festivals this summer. We may also have the opportunity to sell lemonade on Saturdays in the Strip District. Volunteer one or more times per month. Garden Crew. Join us on Saturdays starting in June. Youll get your hands dirty with planting, weeding, and harvesting. Other activities may include assisting children with science experiments, establishing the site as a farmers market, or preparing food for sale during activities.
