How you can help incarcerated people
Hello neighbors! I'm reaching out again on behalf of Jailbreak, an autonomous group providing free support to people inside or coming out of Allegheny County Jail and other PA prisons. You can learn more about us at jailbreakpgh.org. You may have seen the recent reports <https://pinjjournalism.org/county-controller-to-investigate-with-jail-food-shortage-allegations/> from the Pittsburgh Institute for Nonprofit Journalism that people are not being adequately fed at Allegheny County Jail, in large part because of the jail's failure to address or contain their most recent COVID outbreak. Conditions in western PA's other county jails are not much better, and we know that the vast majority <https://www.prisonpolicy.org/graphs/pretrial_by_state.html> of people in county jails are simply there awaiting trial. One way to help alleviate this suffering is by sending commissary money to indigent folks who rely entirely on the jail for nourishment. We support many incarcerated folks with both one-time and monthly $100 grants for their commissary needs. Everything costs money in prison. People in prison have to buy their own hygiene products, over the counter medications, clothing, and shoes. Most prisoners with jobs in PA make between 19 and 42 cents an hour, with a highest possible wage of $1 an hour. Since July 2020, we have raised and sent over $25,000 to 100+ individuals locked up in ACJ and other county jails, state, and federal prisons. Currently, we have 17 people on our waitlist and a fundraising goal of $2,000. Please consider donating to our commissary fund to help an incarcerated person survive.
