Wow! Thanks to one and all for the deluge of helpful emails - despite having lived here for quite awhile, I somehow did not know the story about the peacocks. In case anyone else was wondering the same thing, I'll do my best to summarize here: The peacocks, while welcome to come and be fed at the zoo, do not technically live there. They are free to come and go as they please, and for whatever reason, that bit of road is often where they feel like going. So there isn't really anyone to notify if the peacocks happen to show up there - or on the roof of your home, as happened to one respondent! I guess all we can do is to be especially vigilant while going through that stretch of road - for new arrivals to HP, that's why traffic often slows down through that section.
