ISO Knowledgable Gardener RE: What's Killing The Blackeyed Susans?
Dear Neighbors, Like many people these days, I've started to pay a lot more attention to my yard/garden this Spring and Summer. I've noticed something with my blackeyed susans. An entire stem will, over a matter of days, wither up and die. This seems to start with a yellowing of the leaves, and then the flowers themselves dry up and die. This does not appear to be the normal dying off of a flower that has gone to seed (stem seems to be impacted first, and the flowers aren't necessarily mature yet anyway). I've been cutting back and removing the dying stems as soon as I notice them, fearing something fungal and hoping to stop the spread. On walks around the neighborhood, I am noticing other yards with whole beds full of dead blackeyed susans. Does anyone know what is going on? Is there some sort of pest that is doing this? If anyone out there has knowledge to share, I'm all ears. Thanks Nick Delphia
