BURGH BEES Apiary Work Day Many Hands Make Light Work It's time to tidy up the Community Apiary! We will be having a work day at the Homewood Apiary on Saturday, April 25 from 9am until around 3pm. Come for an hour or two (or three or four). The Burgh Bees Commuity Apiary is located in the 6900 Block of Susquehanna St. This is your chance to play in the garden and get your hands dirty. No worries if you've never helped ­ helpers of all abilities are welcome and be sure we will find a good task for you. The areas of focus will be the following: 1. Re-mow to establish the no-mow zones. If this could be done prior to the workday it helps to give volunteers the visual clues as to the layout and work spaces of the Apiary 2. Clear winter debris along the fence, in the rain garden and in the meadow 3. Garden Lovers - those with garden knowledge to clean out/oversee the prep of the raised garden beds and the beds on either side of the apiary - the lavender in the front raised bed may need trimmed - and the herb beds will need attending to as well. 4. Weed-whack inside the apiary to make this space presentable and cleaning out and filling up the water tubs 5. Clear out the weeds first and then Re-mulch the path and the areas around the trees 6. Attend to the trees. The Apple Tree will need the suckers knocked off and the others will just need to be attended to for addressing any winter damage and for shaping. 7. We will have several Graduates from the Penn State Master Gardner¹s supporting us in the clean-up, so those with some experience will have an opportunity to learn even more about our native plants and trees during the clean up. Please bring tools for weeding (shovels, trowels, hand rakes), spreading mulch (garden rake), wheelbarrow, clippers, gloves, etc. Lawnmowers are welcome! Bring snacks/refreshments to share.
