Tick testing for lyme's disease
Hello Everyone, Wife got a tick bite today and we managed to keep the tick. We were hoping to take it somewhere to get tested locally, however, we haven't been able to find anywhere that does it. Allegheny Department of Health website says they'll identify a tick, but they won't test it for diseases. I also called a few Urgent care's (MedExpress and UPMC). There's a few online sites that'll test it, but I'm afraid the results might take too long to come back and the window for the 1-time dose treatment might have passed. Does anyone know for sure of any locations that might offer testing of the tick itself? Also, please consider this a friendly reminder to check yourself after you've been outside! Thanks
Hello Everyone, I got an overwhelming amount of responses to my tick testing inquiry, so if I didn't get to respond to you individually, thanks for the input, it was much appreciated! For those of you who don't know, you can get the actual tick tested a few different ways. A GP can order it as a diagnostic test, or you can mail it in (www.ticklab.org was recommended by many). I have also heard veterinarians can get it tested and there's even take home tests too. Of course if the tick tests positive (~40% do in western PA) it does not necessarily mean you've contracted Lyme's, but a negative test may help you avoid an unnecessary course of antibiotics. In my wife's case she managed to get in to see Dr. G here in Highland Park who was able to order the lab testing. Hopefully it goes without saying, this shouldn't be taken as any medical advice and you should seek the counsel of a medical professional if you find yourself in a similar situation.
