In this workshop, we will focus on all aspects of pointing and cleaning of stone, brick masonry, and Terracotta. We will also discuss paint removal. Chemicals for cleaning and the proper techniques, as well as the different mortar mixes and colors used in the restoration process of brick, stone and terracotta buildings. DATE: Saturday Sept 29

 Stephen Shelton has worked in the construction industry since 1972 starting out as a masonry laborer. In his experience over the years, he has worked professionally as a masonry laborer, bricklayer, stone mason, tile setter, welder, electrician, and plumber. Having grown up in the east end of Pittsburgh, he came to love the old buildings and houses which older generation's of craftsmen had built. In 2001, Mr. Shelton started Shelton Masonry Inc. by himself and a wheelbarrow. Today his company employs 22 people and is one of the premier restoration companies in the city, working on both commercial and residential projects.

Whether you teach social studies, language arts, math, art, or science it can be as easy as a walk outside your school building. Through this 4-part course, we'll demonstrate and practice techniques that you can employ in your classroom. We use Pittsburgh as our model, but the techniques we share can be used in any city, any neighborhood. Whether your school schedule or budget allows time for fieldtrips or you just take a walk outside your school building, you will learn ways to enrich the classroom experience for your students and link to existing curriculum. So, come -- let’s explore Pittsburgh! Your may think you know this city. You may have lived here all your life. Come walk to look beyond the obvious to learn how our rich history and challenging topography have created the city we know today. From Mt. Washington to Market Square, from archival records to present day, we’ll explore ways to use this city as a resource to support and expand classroom curriculum, whatever your discipline.
