The War We Do Not See: The Ground Truth: The Human Cost of War & Fallujah 2004 As part of Eyes Wide Open, the American Friends Service Committee¹s memorial display about the human cost of the war on Iraq, a film series will be presented on Thursday 30th March and April 1st. The Women¹s International League for Peace and Freedom is sponsoring the series comprised of two films, The Ground Truth: The Human Cost of War and Fallujah 2004. Both of these outstanding documentaries provide personal testimonies about consequences of the war in Iraq that Americans do not see in mainstream media. Yet, to comprehend the true cost of war, it is essential to know what it does to those who experience it directly. These two films provide an authoritative witness to the tragedy of war. Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Patricia Foulkrod¹s documentary, The Ground Truth: The Human Cost of War, allows us hear the stories of combat veterans and makes visible the ongoing impact of the war in their lives and lives of their families. Entirely respectful of these men and women and their experiences, this film, through its extensive interviews, shares with us the hardships and dangers of war, the gap between the harsh reality of war and the sanitized war portrayed in the media, and the often callous treatment returning soldiers are faced with by military authorities and the Veterans Administration. Producer/Director Patricia Foulkrod states, ³It became clear while filming, that the broken hearts and shattered lives that I was seeing were so invisible. So I tried to create a film that might blow the yellow ribbons off the trees, and encourage people to really wrap their arms around our soldiers and their families.so we can take responsibility for their suffering, that is being experienced in our name.²
