[Highland Park] Walks in the Woods - Summer 2007
Let's take a walk in the park! Once again the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is sponsoring walks in the four major Pittsburgh Parks. Each walk is led by volunteer docents who can tell you about what's going on in the park, park history, and can talk about the many different types of plants you'll see in the parks. The walks in Highland Park are scheduled for June 6 and August 1. We meet at the restored fountain and gardens at the North Highland Avenue entrance to the park at Bunkerhill Street. Please arrive promptly so we can begin the walk at 6:30 as scheduled. The walks are open to everyone but please keep in mind that paths in the woods can be uneven and/or muddy. The exact path we take depends on who shows up for the walk. I don't suggest bringing a stroller for these walks but you might be able to bring your child in something like a Baby Bjorn. If leading walks like this interests you, please let me know because docent opportunities are available. The schedule for the other parks is as follows: Frick: June 13, July 11, & August 8; Riverview: June 20, July 18, August 18; and Schenley: June 27, July 25, & August 22. We are planning special Sunday Walks in the Woods in September with a special focus on park and area history. Dear Fellow Cat Owners, I can't remember a time in my life when I did not own cats. This email is an appeal to fellow cat lovers, and particularly owners of outdoor cats, to please be mindful of the impact that our cats may have on the wildlife of our neighborhood. When I learned about the tremendous impact that domestic cats have on the songbird population in the U.S., I decided to keep my cat inside. Although this may not be the option that you choose for your four-legged-friend, would you please make sure that your outdoor cat wears a bell? Give our songbirds, squirrels, and other creatures a fighting chance! Thank you for your consideration, Melissa Rychener
