[Highland Park] BRYANT STREET MARKET BEER UPDATE
As expected, I heard from TONS of neighbors. Which was the desired effect. Did anyone see the episode of the Simpson's where Homer was distilling booze in his basement during Springfield's prohibition? He was nicknamed the " The Beer Baron"....That's all I could think about when reading the emails. If you have not seen it, check it out, it's a classic. Secondly, I'm not running for Mayor. Ok, enough with the humor. On one side of the fence we have an overwhelming majority in favor of the store selling beer, roughly 90%. On the other side of the fence , we have a very small minority not in favor of the store selling beer. roughly 10% Would seem like a no-brainer right? The problem is, the few concerns that the minority have are very important to me. #1 - People drinking beer in the store, I am not in favor of this at all and could be a deal breaker. Although I think very highly of our current clientele, we could attract a new type of crowd.(although I think that's unlikely, pricing usually takes care of that). The license stipulates the seating of 30 and consumption on the premises. I honestly think we would have very few people sitting and drinking in the store and that most will just buy beer and leave. I will inquire about the drinking in the store with our attorney. We must have seating for 30, or no license. The seating area needs to be 300 square feet, that's not huge. Drinking in the store is the biggest concern of mine. #2 - The dynamic of the store will change, and maybe not for the better. I had some comments that the store would have less groceries, but we would do our best to maximize the space. I have made a living selling food for the last 20+ years, that's what I know. I would never change the store just to make more money and not have it feel right. People have responded wonderfully to what I have done so far, and selling beer could alter that. The only thing I really know about beer is drinking it. #3 - You can buy beer anywhere, but you can't have Bryant Street Market anywhere. Excuse me while I wipe a tear. Another very good point that I did not initially take into consideration. People seem to like the store the way it is, as we add new products all the time and it is family friendly. I really like the serenity of the store, especially around holidays when everywhere else you go it's a madhouse. I think with the lines of beers we would carry, that would dictate the crowd we would get. I am going to D's in Regent Square and the IGA on Forbes in Oakland for some investigative work. I'll be in touch with all findings, this is by no means a done deal so stay tuned.
