Vaughn Ampersand of AARP will be presenting a work/retraining program that pays $7.25/hour for 18 hours per week at a host site for individuals that meet income guidelines ($13.5K for individuals, $17+K for 2 family members, etc.). ENEC will be distributing flyers to Carnegie Library, Kingsley and Vintage. Please print out the flyer and post within your establishment. If you want flyers dropped off at your location, please call 412-362-8580 and let us know the quantity needed. o The Carnegie Library - East Liberty Branch will be hosting a Deconstruction party on Friday, May 15 from 7 to 10 pm, prior to their closing for renovation. Some members of GPAPN have already secured seats for their youth and chaperones, however, there are approximately 115 seats still available that will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in bringing your middle and/or high school youth from your afterschool program, please respond to Twilia Simmons-Walker via twila.simmons-walker@alcosan.org by Friday, May 8th, 2009. - The Western Pennsylvania Herb Society will have an herb plant sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23 outside of Trader Joe's, at 6343 Penn Ave., East Liberty. - There will be a public hearing to discuss the concept of a Curfew Center on Tuesday, June 2 at 1:30 pm at the City Council Chambers of the City-County Building, 414 Grant Street, Downtown. A curfew center would offer a place to take juveniles out at night past curfew hours, as well as supportive services to get these youth back on track and off the streets with no structured or learning activities for after-school or evening hours. If this is something you are interested in learning more about or voicing you opinion, contact Dan Gilman Chief of Staff of Councilman Peduto at 412.255.2133. - The implosion of the Penn Circle highrise, the remaining tower of the Federal American Properties, is scheduled for early morning (8 or 9 am) Sunday, May 17th. - Wireless Neighborhoods would like to invite you to our Afterschool Services Fair that will take place on Tuesday, May 19th from 10am to 1pm at the Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Only supplemental service providers and actual after school providers are invited and encouraged to attend! The target audience would be the supervisors of the After School Programs, no parents or children will be in attendance. The supplemental service providers (such as the arts, exercise, technology, curriculum, nutrition, etc.) will be asked to present their services to afterschool program providers. These service providers will be given a designated table from which they may advertise information about their services. (The room will be set up like a job fair, in which the After School program providers will walk around to the service provider's tables). Food will be provided at this event, and participation is free. Please pass this information along to other programs that could also benefit from this opportunity. Please RSVP by May 11th (by emailing rsvp@wireless-neighborhoods.org.) - newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival starts next week and will run from May 7 to 10 at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater. Each evening is a mix of ideas and styles with short works (10 - 15 mins) and post show discussions with the choreographers and performers. For information about the performances and more, go to www.kelly-strayohrn.org. - The Venture Outdoors Festival will be held at Point State Park, Saturday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This free festival is part of the city's Great Outdoors Week. A Family and Community Programs booth will be set up where participants will try bike bowling and have the opportunity to meet the organizations working on this initiative. Venture Outdoors is working with the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Kingsley Association and the AGH Northside Partnership. Three free Family Outdoor Festivals 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM a.. June 20 at Frick Park, corner of Forbes & Braddock Avenue b.. July 25 at Mellon Park, corner of 5th & Penn Avenue c.. August 29 in Allegheny Commons park, Northside Activities will include the Climb Pittsburgh rock climbing wall, Tyke Hike crafts, an REI environmental stewardship demo, an L.L.Bean camping demo, healthy foods cooking, and the Pitt African Drumming Ensemble. Each event will offer giveaway items such as trail maps, bike lights, Heinz Pickle Pins, pedometers and water bottles to further promote outdoor recreation engagement.
