[Highland Park] Help! Stink Bug invasion - Exterminator Recommendations?
Hi! Last weekend's Pittsburgh Post Gazette had an article that says, essentially, that the only way to address the sink bug invasion is to spray the outside of the house in the fall before they make it inside. We've been fighting a valiant battle, but I think we are losing. Do any of you have recommendations for reputable exterminators? I need someone who can get up to the 3rd floor. Many thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- Heather Conrad, Heths Ave "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and it looks like work." Thomas Edison
Everyone, The short answer appears to be that you should make sure your windows and any cracks are thoroughly sealed. If, like us, that would mean replacing all of your windows and it is sort of out of the budget, then make sure you have a vacuum with a hose attachment! You may need to throw away your receptacle if you really don't want new bugs, because of the larvae. If you don't have a vacuum - someone suggested an old papertowel tube with tape on one end and some quick, easy cover on the other and then flushing the suckers. You want to make sure there is nothing in the toilet for them to hold onto, though, cause they are pretty fast and getting out and may take multiple flushes. There were a couple of suggestions of borax mixed with Dawn and water as a spray which will kill them and their unhatched larvae... Here is a slightly less caustic version: "In the meantime, mix dawn detergent in a spray bottle and spray them and arouind all windows and doors, etc. Does help. If you use hot waterm kills them. Do not squash them, more will follow the scent!" Even the article said that spraying would only last a week and can only be done outdoors. Only the most caustic stuff is effective, and I've got kids and dogs to attend to as well. Here is one response: "encourage you to google stink bugs and read entry from penn state U. spraying is least effective method and poisons you and atmosphere. you need someone who will seal up the entrances the insects are using and who will vacuum up what he can (with his own vacuum system, not yours). It will probably have to be done more than once since the larvae will hatch." I will send along exterminator recommendations as soon as I get a chance to pull them together. Thanks so much everyone!
