[Highland Park] [Update.unionproject] Community Discussion, Enroll in clay classes, volunteer opps, first friday
- www.unionproject.org - Attention East End Community Leaders Union Project would like to invite you to a community discussion. Through personal connections and news reports, we are increasingly aware of issues around violence and public safety in the East End. Violence perpetrated by youth is one of the main concerns. We are also increasingly aware of many proactive solution-oriented efforts among grassroots community groups, the new Mayor, Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent and local Police. Our hope is that you will come with ideas, suggestions and guidance for the Union Project, our elected officials and each other about what new efforts can be made to help avert future muggings, robberies, assaults, etc. Most importantly – come to the discussion to help think about how we can collectively cultivate hope, opportunity and investment among neighborhood youth! Please come to the community discussion on Thursday, March 23 at 7:30 PM. RSVP by emailing hilary@unionproject.org or calling 412.363.4550. Deadline extended for clay and stained glass classes We still have several spots open in the majolica class (class #6C4), the mosaic class (class #6C1), and the stained glass class (#6SGB). The deadline to register for these classes has been extended to March 23. Please visit www.unionproject.org/programs for more details on the upcoming courses or email Justin@unionproject.org. “Summer Sponsors” Volunteer Opportunities Union Project has two major opportunities to open our doors to our neighborhood this summer. The first is the free summer lunch program sponsored by Citi Parks. We are delighted to have this opportunity to serve the children in our neighborhood by providing a free lunch Monday through Friday. Also, every Saturday is Homegrown Saturday, an art and farmer’s market. The market consists of an organic farm stand from Mildreds’ Daughter (run by their Peabody High School interns), backyard growers selling their vegetables and flowers, artists vendor tables, Union Station Café and a free arts related activity for children. We need your help to make these programs successful! “Summer Sponsors” is a volunteer program that asks your organization to provide volunteer assistance in staffing these summer programs. “Summer Sponsors” is designed for you to engage a diverse group of your constituency. The summer lunch program is an ideal opportunity for senior citizens, small groups, high school students and stay at home parents and the market is perfect for those who work during the week. Please help us provide these opportunities for our neighbors. Contact hilary@unionproject.org or 412-363-4550 x6 with any questions or to arrange a sponsorship. SUPPORT THE UNION PROJECT AND THE EAST END FOOD COOP WED. MAR. 29 Take your grocery list to the East End Food Coop on Wednesday, March 29 and support two great east end organizations! How? The Union Project will benefit from the East End Food Coop's One Percent Wednesday program by receiving 1% of the total sales from that day. So you could have dinner in their cafe, stock up on your 'green' supplies, get fresh asparagus and buy that wooden bowl you've been admiring and all the while enhance the state of the Union Project! Stop by our table for a chat and to learn what's new this spring at the Union Project. Any questions? Contact Kathy Miller at 412-363-4550 ext 4 or kathy@unionproject.org. Assistant Stained Glass Instructor Andrea Boykowycz is offering a workshop in decorating eggs in the Ukrainian "pysanky" style. This method uses hot wax and bright aniline dyes to develop intricate, multi-colored batiked designs. This is an ancient art, and the traditional Ukrainian designs involve symbolism that's both pagan and Christian -- but you can use these techniques to develop your own decorative style and symbolism, if you like! Classes will be on two consecutive Saturdays, April 1 and April 8, from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Space is limited to 20 per workshop. A $5 materials fee will cover eggs, tools, wax and dye. RSVP to andrea@twirt.com to reserve your spot! Recycle your paper and earn money for Union Project Now you can recycle most of your paper at the Union Project! No more sorting! No more Saturday trips to the recycling center! Union Project is participating in the Abitibi Paper Retriever® program. A new green and yellow paper-recycling bin is located at the rear of the Union Project property along Samantha Way. This program will recycle all of the paper we collect, convey it to the world's largest newspaper recycler for use in manufacturing newsprint, and, in exchange for our donation of these reusable resources, pay us for the paper we collect! Abitibi will recycle catalogs, colored paper, envelopes, fax paper, folders, junk mail, magazines, newspapers, newspaper advertisements and inserts, notebooks and office paper. If you have questions about this recycling program please contact Kathy@unionproject.org. _______________________________________________ update mailing list update@unionproject.org http://unionproject.mennonite.net/mailman/listinfo/update.unionproject
