[Highland Park] Another Day of the Dead Art Workshop
Dear friends and neighbors, This Thursday's Day of the Dead Community Art Workshop at the Union Project is completely full (if you tried to register but have NOT received a confirmation email from me, please contact me immediately). Since there have been several inquiries from folks who will not be able to attend on Thursday, I am considering offering a second workshop on Sunday, November 1 (the actual Dia de los Muertos) from 1 pm to 4 pm at Creative Reuse Pittsburgh, which is upstairs at Construction Junction. If at least 5 people register for the Sunday workshop, we will go ahead and confirm it. The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is celebrated on November 1 and 2. It is an opportunity to remember and celebrate those who have died. In this workshop, we will explore the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition, then engage both tradition and personal creativity to build individual artworks celebrating lost loved ones. The workshop fee of $25 includes all materials. I've included the original workshop description below for those who may not have seen it the first time. If you would like to participate in the Sunday workshop, please email your name, email address, and phone number to me at bluegreenchair@gmail.com as soon as possible. I will send a confirmation email to all participants as soon as I receive five registrations. *Day of the Dead Community Art Workshop* Sunday, November 1, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Creative Reuse Pittsburgh $25 includes all materials To register, please email name and phone number to Erika Johnson at bluegreenchair@gmail.com The Mexican Dia de los Muertos (November 1 and 2) is an opportunity to remember and celebrate those who have died. In this workshop led by Erika Johnson and sponsored by Creative Reuse Pittsburgh<http://creativereusepgh.blogspot.com/>, we will explore the Day of the Dead tradition, and create small works of art to honor loved ones lost. An "ofrenda" is an altar, usually built in the home, to honor a departed loved one. We will discuss the traditional elements of a Dia de los Muertos altar (or offering), then create small personal shrines to celebrate thelives of those we have lost. The result will be a unique and personal work of art that engages both tradition and individual expression. Participants are encouraged (though not required) to bring photographs (or photocopies) and other small items that relate to the person they wish to honor. Erika will provide a selection of wooden and metal boxes and a wide array of art supplies, tools, decorative materials and found objects. This workshop is designed for adults, but young people over 12 are welcome to participate with a grown friend or parent.
