Hello, My partner and I are expecting our first this August but despite being here in Pittsburgh for almost 5 years we don't have anyone in our circle with children and are looking for recommendations for childcare. We should have 6 months leave between the two of us so we won't need anything until next January but know that there can be long waitlist. We don't necessarily need to be in Highland Park. My husband works at Pitt so any of the areas around Highland, Garlfied, Oakland, etc would be options. We will be needing full time Monday through Friday as well. Any recommendations that we can look into would be greatly appreciated. We also don't have need it to be a large scale daycare, if there is someone in the neighborhood that runs a childcare at home we'd love to hear from them as well. Thanks Kate
Thank you to everyone for your suggestions on childcare options, it has helped to widen our search. It appears that several other expectant new parents also read the email and I was going to share some of the recommendations. Several people recommended Carlow early learning and this was one we had already applied to. They will be sending out information on if you have a spot in April so if you want to consider them get your application in. The only thing I learned when I spoke to them though is their program starts in September and the baby must be at least 6 weeks old. If you get a spot you have to pay starting at that time to hold a spot or go back on the waitlist. Here were some other recommendations. The Carriage House in Squirrel Hill had several people recommend it. CYA (Catholic Youth Association) Lawrenceville A place to grow (this was in the Fox Chapel/Aspinwall area but that might fit your needs) Eastminster Childcare Center (the church by Home Depot) Deakings Daycare (right around Morningside) One place that I looked into was Bright Horizons on Bigelow Blvd in Oakland. They were a bit expensive but they have discounts for UPMC employees, sadly that is not me or my spouse. The University of Pittsburgh Child Care center was also recommended by several people. We are on this list but since there are some expectant parents and potentially couples thinking of having children, I wanted to put that out there as well. However their waitlist is long, about 3 years. We applied last May before we were even pregnant and they moved us to the conceived list when we found out we were pregnant but that waitlist is still 2 years long. Not to discourage anyone but something to know if you are thinking about them, just send in the application now. Thanks again for all the wonderful responses. Best of luck to everyone.
