[Highland Park] Sandys Deli
I felt it necessary to write a response for those few neighbours that perhaps do not have all the information regarding the issue of this store, and more directly; its liquor license. For those of us that live close to it, the problems are very clear, most prominently in the warmer (spring, summer, and fall) months. On any given day, you will witness that a large portion of this stores customers are unsavory to say the least. Many are drug dealers, their gang hood friends, and their assorted clientele. It is clear that the liquor license has a part to pay in this chain of business, as I have not witnessed any similar activity about either of the other local delis in the same vicinity. Nor is it an exaggeration to say that I have witnessed thousands of open drug deals right here in close proximity to this store. At any time of day, and late into the night; we have to put up with blasting car stereos which are almost invariably increased in volume when they pull up to the store, so that they can enjoy their row while they shop. these stereos are so loud that they actually rattle the windows in the back of our house, and make it impossible to hear our own stereo, television, or conversation. In addition, I have personally witnessed daily, many of its customers filling our street with trash, many of its customers dealing, or buying drugs openly, many of its customers almost daily urinating on several of my neighbours properties. While personally I have to admit that were this business to collapse entirely; I would dance a happy little jig: I should make it clear that no one in this community is against having a small business in this location. However, we would hope that it would be one of the likes of T'azo D'oro, or even Yuris who are clearly considerate of the community in which they have elected to do business. This cannot be said to be true of Sandys deli (and I should like to point out that as far as I know; NONE of those of us that want this situation to change have been, as has been suggested by one writer, hypocritical enough to do business there. I have not personally shopped there in over 6 years). This is not a business that shows any concern or compassion for the community in which it chooses to do business. In the past few years, we have attempted to mediate positively, and directly, and have been laughed at, dismissed, insulted, and even threatened for our efforts. What we actually want to accomplish, is to get rid of the liquor license to this business. We believe this is the core of the problem. Two other similar business' are successful here, and neither of them sell liquor, so we find it hard to believe that Sandys, with an already broader selection of groceries would kick up its heels and die were it to stop selling liquor. With the HPCDC, and ELDI currently investing such great energies, and funds into renovating several properties in this area, we need a business that empathizes, and reflects these concerns, and ambitions; that delivers to that greater market of the Highland Park Community. In all its incarnations, and in all the years I have lived here; Sandys deli has NOT been that business. I hope this clears up some of the confusion Cheer Brett
