[Highland Park] Aggressive Vivant Salesman
We just had a very aggressive salesman from Vivant come to our door trying to sell us a security alarm system (I had just finished reading the earlier post). It took several very firm refusals and basically shutting the door in his face to get rid of him. He told us there had been a number of break-ins in the neighborhood, mentioned names of people "down the street" and asked if we'd heard what happened to them, said "phone lines were being cut" -- I felt very uneasy after he left my porch. I "Googled" the company and up popped several articles from Canada, Utah and other locations reporting complaints about this company - Utah BBB has them on their alert list. I copied a paragraph from a Bloomberg articlew about the company: "Selling door-to-door requires a strong personality, and the company’s salespeople have been accused of being too aggressive. In 2009, the Better Business Bureau of Utah collected 573 complaints from bureaus nationwide; the number decreased to 448 last year, says Jane Driggs, president and chief executive of the accreditation group in Salt Lake City. In Oregon, for example, the company agreed to pay $60,000 last year in a deal it reached with state prosecutors after consumers complained of misleading and aggressive sales tactics that included false offers of free security systems, bogus claims of partnerships with fire or police associations, and refusals to leave homeowners’ property." Several of the articles reported that they used the technique of "do you know what happened to so-and-so down the street?" to frighten people into buying their system. Google and read -- don't buy from these door-to-door salesmen!
