[Highland Park] National Night Out
I was talking with one of my neighbors this evening about having a block party or something similar... and we discussed perhaps having this on Tuesday, August 3 in conjunction with National Night Out. Jan Stayianos mentioned this in her "Block Watch" column in the July HPCC newsletter that went to everyone in the neighborhood. If you live on Portland Street or Bryant Street near there and are interested in participating in (or organizing :-) such an event--please reply to me. I will gladly hand responsibility for organizing this to someone else :-) I encourage other "blocks" to organize parties for August 3. If you are interested in organizing something for your block, please let me know what your "block" is so I can send your email address to your neighbors to help organize. Rudy
Have you organized your block party for Tuesday night yet? It's not too late! You don't have to block off the street (which requires a permit) to have a potluck dinner with others on your block--you can use front yards and porches. In any case, talk with your neighbors to try to do something on Tuesday. Knowing your neighbors can be a real help in keeping our neighborhood safe and secure. At the very least, sit on the porch or just leave your porch lights on. When I wrote about National Night Out about 2 1/2 weeks ago, I asked folks to send me information in order to help arrange block parties--but I didn't get enough responses to be helpful. This is really something that should be done face-to-face anyway; we really should all know our neighbors. The "official" National Night Out site has some suggestions for how you can organize your block party if you still need tips, it also gives some background about the event: <http://www.nationaltownwatch.org/nno/> Rudy
