Re: [Highland Park] Recycling
Hi - I found a set of blue bags at a dollar store (the large Dollar Store in Verona, in the shopping center with the Giant Eagle). You usually can find them at grocery stores, too. Dropping off at Construction Junction is another option. Now that many of us take our own re-usable bags to grocery shop, we don't seem to have anything to use to recycle our stuff with the city. Some have tried to use the blue bins but apparently they get stolen quickly. While I can't officially speak for the city, I noticed that they have taken cardboard boxes full of plastic, etc. when a neighbor has left recycling out like that. I have followed suit and so far they have always taken it. I wanted to offer it as a suggestion and also if you run out of boxes, it's easy to get them from local vendors. Whenever I go to a smaller shop (just seems easier to request from them rather than, say, a busy Giant Eagle) I ask for boxes and they are more than happy to give me their broken down boxes. This may do double good as I've noticed that many businesses in the city don't tend to recycle. So if you do this, you may be helping re-use cardboard boxes which might otherwise have gone in the regular trash. (City businesses not recycling is another issue. They tend to have private companies deal with their trash. The last time I did office work for a company in the city I inquired as to whether the private refuse company we used would recycle if we separated the trash. They said that wasn't part of their normal operation (REALLY I THOUGHT RECYCLING WAS MANDATORY BY LAW IN PGH?) but they would possibly do so for extra $. It seems this needs improvement.)
