I pushed back some tall aster shoots this evening to reveal two very strange orange mushrooms, shaped like large fingers and having ugly brown slime on the tips. These are "Stinkhorns", aka "Witches Fingers". They smell bad to attract flies, which land on the sticky slime and take away spores to spread the fungus. They are actually harmless and supposedly edible, though I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. If you would like to see them, they are in our bank garden along the sidewalk at 842 N. Euclid, almost to the corner. Please don't poke at them or it may make the smell worse. Richard K.
