[Highland Park] walnut market
I am taking this opportunity to spread the word that Walnut Market is definitely back in business, Michael is on the mend, and that I can look forward to the Christmas ham that I traditionally order from him (Boar's Head). I also depend on Walnut Market for other Boar's Head meats, Bread Works bread, spinach pies, humus, maraschino cherries, plus the many last minute items that are lacking in my pantry or refrigerator (milk, brownie mix, orange juice, etc, etc). I should also mention the pork chops that Rick or Michael cut for me on the spot. I figure it's worth an extra dime or so on the price of an item to enjoy the advantage of making a quick trip to Walnut Market with no parking hassles and no long line at the cashier. Plus I always get a friendly greeting from Michael or Lena. It will mean a lot to them during the holidays to have you show your support by shopping there. Jean Thomas

I hadn't realized that Walnut Market had so many custom products. I only knew about the apple tarts (which the whole family loves). It was good to be told that there's something special there, beyond the convenience of the staples (charcoal lighter fluid, chocolate ice cream, bread, milk, etc.) Jean asks us to weigh any extra cost against the convenience and time-saving. That makes sense to me, and I habitually consider that trade-off. But I've started to think about the extra money in a new way. I think of it as a small investment in the life and development of Bryant St. When I've gone out on that financial limb for an unbudgeted dinner at Reynold's, or extra cream puffs at FGF, or apple tarts at Walnut, I've never regretted it. I found that the light bill was still paid, the gas was still on, the mortgage was still met. With only a few extra dollars, it's a way for me to say, "I'm glad you're here, I like what you offer, I want other people to see that they can succeed here, too."
