First of all, I want to thank everyone who responded to our daycare crisis. As I just wrote to someone, this listserv is an amazing "family" of folks that really rally when someone needs help and I feel lucky to live here. We have our emergency daycare sorted out for next week and have been told that we can start our normal one the week after so we are currently set. That said, I wanted to supply to other people some of the responses that people gave in case you are in a similar situation. I'm not going to include all the individuals who replied and offered personal services as they may not be able to do so in every case but know that I greatly appreciate all of you who offered your time. You are truly the best. Some businesses and organizations people recommended: - Jeremiah's Place at the Kingsley Center in East Liberty was the most mentioned (412-924-0726) and someone vouched for the people that run it. It looks like a great place for true emergency situations. - A couple people recommended signing up for care.com, which is a daycare and nanny resource. They'll help find support at any time and is something soon-to-be or parents in general should sign-up for anyway. - Bright Horizons (http://www.brighthorizons.com/programs/back-up-care) was mentioned and we had put out some calls there. We were unable to determine if the closest location in Oakland does back-up as they still haven't returned out call but someone vouched for the location in the South Side. - Waterworks Child Development (http://mobile.waterworkschilddevelopment.com) was also recommended and while they don't have a dedicated back-up service they seemed helpful. - Eastminster Church daycare - We contacted them and they do not currently offer drop-in service. Seems like a great daycare, just not for emergency situations. - Rodman Street Baptist Church was recommended by someone and we did not get a chance to call before we got the support we needed, but they apparently have a reasonable day rate in an emergency situation (provided there is room). And again, there were lots of wonderful people who offered personal help. Thank you all! Sincerely, rob
