In response to your recent emails regarding drug activity on Mellon Street, I have assigned several plainclothes personnel to the area. If anyone observes illegal activity, PLEASE call 911 and report the activity. A good description of the persons involved, vehicles plates ect., are useful. Additionally, I am working with Rodman Street Missionary Church to "Adopt the Block" to assist with intervention, prevention and revitalization efforts. Finally, I am attempting to set up a mini training session at Zone 5 regarding "Witness Protection" efforts, to inform everyone about reporting crimes, and feeling secure in the community when we take the steps to get involved. As everyone knows, the 800 and 900 blocks of Mellon Street are havens for drug dealers, thugs and generally bad characters. I live at 922 Mellon Street. On Tuesday, when the weather was beautiful, I came home to a flurry of activity: Drug dealing right out in front of my house, people sitting on the porches of abandoned properties drinking beer and breaking bottles, thumping radios, etc. Yesterday two members of the democratic committee were meeting me at my house to attend a dinner and as they walked by 924 Mellon Street, they were asked if they wanted to "buy any reefer?" The dealers don't even live there! In the 800 block, dealers are actually dropped off in the morning to "do business" and they leave at night. And very few people see this because half the properties on the 800 block are owned (and have been for years) by the Highland Park CDC and have yet to be developed into livable spaces! WHY CAN'T SOMETHING BE DONE? Please explain to me? My husband and I have been fighting the good fight for 6 years, we've seen our supporting neighbors sell to slumlords because they couldn't stand it any longer. We need GOOD NEIGHBORS, NO BEER SALES, AND POLICE INTERVENTION TO GET RID OF THE DRUG DEALERS in order to fix things.
