Starting Sun., Sept. 5, 94B service to N. Negley and Penn Avenues, Larimer, Aspinwall, Waterworks and O’Hara will be discontinued. Beginning Sept. 7th route 77F will be revised and replaced by 87 Friendship (Morningside branch). 87 Friendship will operate between Downtown Pittsburgh, the Strip District, Bloomfield, Friendship, Negley and Stanton Avenues, Chislett, Greenwood and Jancey streets. Limited trips will operate to Baker and Butler streets. Service to Larimer from East Liberty, formerly offered by the 94B, will be available on route 74 Homewood-Squirrel Hill. Meanwhile, service to Waterworks is available on route 74B and 500 from East Liberty. Both operate through Highland Park, not Morningside. Alternate trips on route 87 will serve Stanton Heights beyond Stanton at Chislett. Limited trips will operate to Baker and Butler streets. Service on the Stanton Heights branch of 87 Friendship will operate seven days a week. *Message from the President* Transportation choices are an essential asset for any community. The ability to have easy access to a job, school, or shopping is a major consideration when selecting a place to live. Morningside, like many city neighborhoods, is fortunate to provide residents with a variety of transportation choices. Given our location and the physical design of the neighborhood, Morningsiders can drive, walk, bike or take a bus to some of the city's finest amenities, not to mention many destinations inside of the community. Communities across the country that are a short distance from major employment centers (think Downtown and Oakland), have a compact physical design (think places that require only a short walk to a corner store, park or church) and have quick access to shopping or other services (think the Waterworks or East Liberty) have remained healthy or seen increased attention from buyers during the current real estate downturn. Morningside, which has many of these characteristics, has been no exception. However, when you begin to take away some of these transportation choices the situation can change. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s transportation budget is facing a major shortfall; and in part as a result, the Port Authority of Allegheny County will be discontinuing many routes in its system. Starting September 5th, the 94B route through Morningside will be one of the victims of the budget shortfall and the authority’s decision. The neighborhood will continue to be served by the new 87 route, which follows the same route as the 77F. MACC, in collaboration with our elected officials, has been in conversations with the Port Authority in recent months. During these conversations we have requested that either the 94B remain a part of the system or the proposed 73 route, which was recommended by the Transit Development Plan to replace the 94B and would travel from RIDC Park along Freeport Road through Highland Park, East Liberty and Oakland, be rerouted through Morningside. It is unclear whether the 73 route will become a reality in any form, given the system-wide service cuts in response to the budget shortfall. HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED? The Port Authority has scheduled a public hearing for August 19th at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Morningside has a long tradition of transportation from the 96 streetcar to the present day that has helped make it one of the city’s great neighborhoods. As residents, we need to do our part to help make it a part of our future *MACC MOVIE NIGHT - August 21, 2010* Join us Saturday, August 21 from 6:00-10:00 PM for MACC’s Annual Movie Night at Joe Natoli Field for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs which will begin at 8:30 PM. Call my office to schedule your appointment today. Save the date! I will be holding my district-wide Senior Fair on November 10th. Details to follow at a later date. Feel free to call the office for more information. SENIORS: are you interested in taking a bus tour to the Capitol to see how the legislature works and then to Hollywood Casino for just a little more fun? If so, call my office to see when we will be scheduling the next tour. Please remember that my office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Please feel free to call anytime for assistance, to schedule an appointment or just to voice your opinion on specific legislation that might be coming to the House Floor for a vote. Sincerely, State Representative Dom Costa *From the Office of Councilman Dowd* PARKING & PENSIONS: After the August break, the City faces a critical decision on the future of our public garages. The State Legislature has required the City to increase its pension fund assets by $210 million to meet at least 50% of its obligations. The Mayor has presented his plan to privatize the garages as the last best idea to meet this obligation. He argues that failure to enact his plan will lead to state takeover of the pension and ultimately, a tax increase to meet the obligation. The Mayor’s proposal settles for a one-time infusion of cash while relinquishing community control over significant public assets for generations. While my fellow City Council members have floated numerous alternative proposals, City Controller Michael Lamb and I have drafted a separate plan for consideration. The Mayor has distributed a draft request for proposals for the community and council to review. Council will be looking for feedback to the Mayor’s and council members’ proposals at a series of public meetings in September. But I encourage you to attend the next Morningside Council-to-Go on Thursday, August 26 from 6:30pm to 8pm at Morning Glory, 1806 Chislett Street. We want to hear your thoughts on these various proposals. GREENWAY: At a community meeting hosted by our office on July 1, Morningside and Stanton Heights residents met with City representatives to discuss the benefits and responsibilities of a greenway. The greenway was first proposed by Morningside residents and would include an overlook at the intersection of Morningside Avenue and Baker Street and a wooded greenway down to the Allegheny River. City employees presented how a greenway provides passive recreation opportunities, improves water management and erosion control, enhances aesthetics, and raises property values. My office highlighted how the City and numerous nonprofit agencies contribute to the long-term maintenance of greenways. Communities that have entered into greenway agreements have access to public and nonprofit resources for the clean-up of significant debris and the prevention of illegal dumping. Both the MACC and the Stanton Heights Neighborhood Association have voted to move forward with the development of a greenway. My office will now submit letters to that effect to City Planning, and then I’ll introduce legislation to City Council informing them of this project. The legislation then goes to City Planning and the Planning Commission. To learn more about or get involved with this green project, please phone 412.255.2140 or email us at district7@city.pittsburgh.pa.us. Sincerely, City Councilman Patrick Dowd *"I've Never Seen so Much Activity in Morningside"* Mike Hellman writes: “This was just one of the comments from our recent Community Yard Sale. It also didn’t hurt that a baseball tournament was going on at Joe Natoli Field. I talked with folks who sold big pieces of furniture and finally cleared out their basements. We met new residents and chatted with our neighbors and enjoyed a great day outdoors. We may have just swapped our treasures from one house to another. Over 50 homes participated this year with many joining in at the last minute. If we missed getting your donation, you can send a $10 check to MACC at P.O. Box 40313, Pittsburgh, PA 15201. Thank you to all our loyal participants and hope to see you around the corner again.” MACC would like to thank Mike for all his hard work! *Image* *News for St. Raphael* Welcome to Father Joseph Sioli, newly appointed pastor of St. Raphael Church. This contest is sponsored by Pepsi and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Please go to the website below and vote up to 10 times a day before August 17. Pittsburgh has a smaller fan base and so we need to try harder in order to win. This grant will complement other urban garden initiatives here in Pittsburgh and provide a positive experience for many local young people. click here <http://cts.vresp.com/c/?MorningsideAreaCommu/2862cdbe7b/a11aed8517/8bcfebfa39/team=pit> *Meetings and Events* MACC meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00p.m. at the Morningside VFW Hall at 1820 Morningside Avenue.
