As a proud resident of Highland Park for almost 20 years, there has been a few incidents over the years, that have made me not so proud. An incident that occurred this past Saturday night is one of them. I was only made aware of it as of last night. I thought that others going through or living in Highland Park, should also be made aware. A man was returning home to this neighborhood from working the 7a-11p shift (yes, a double) and was attacked and surrounded by a large group of young men. These individuals were still hanging out at the Union Project, from a party that was held there. This man was riding his bike going up Negley Avenue and had just passed the Union Project, when he was verbally threatened by an individual to take his bike. The man verbally responded back while still riding, and was then chased on foot by this individual. The man stopped riding in the middle of the street and got off his bike. The young individual then let the rest of the "crowd" know that this man was getting off his bike. These other individuals then all came from their "hanging spots" on the street like a pack of wild dogs. The man, in the middle of Negley Avenue, mind you, was then "completely" surrounded in a circle by a group of young men. The first young individual approached the man and let's just say, thankfully, got a lesson and what he deserved. The second in the "pack" was next and he got his lesson also. At that point, the police showed up and questioned the man and sent everyone on their way. Why this select number of young individuals did not get arrested, I have no idea. They should have, because I'm sure after their encounter with his man ended badly, for them, "someone" else had to pay that night. He was both accosted by males and a FEMALE also. There have been many stories of men on bikes attacked in the city and the outcome was not so well. Very fortunately, this man and his property, because he effectively had to defend himself, was left intact. Yes, this could have happened in any neighborhood today, but it did not. In this day and age, also at any time of the day today, but it did not. While the Union Project is not to blame for the actions of a "few", there was at least 50+ young individuals at the time, in the Negley/Stanton block. And they were just looking for "victims". And I also feel that since their inception, the Union Project has been a very positive part of the Highland Park community. But, there is also a level of "responsibility" when you are hosting such events. With a crowd this large afterwards, something negative, was bound to happen. The Union Project will be contacted regarding their events (parties) with large amount of young individuals. And how some type of "security" after their events MUST be be obtained to possibly disperse these crowds, so no one else will find themselves, the next "prey" in Highland Park, regarding something, that maybe, could have been avoided.
