[Highland Park] Steel City Rowing Club Offers Low-cost Youth Camps for Ages 8-14.
Steel City Rowing Club offers low-cost Youth Camps for ages 8-14. These camps are designed for all children that are excited about wildlife, rowing and kayaking or simply their own creativity. Youth Camps have full day and half day options with the additional extended camp hours for working parents. To ensure a fun, safe and eventful camp, registration is limited. Please see following descriptions for half day adventures: Ages 8-10 Art on the Allegheny - Learn about and explore the Allegheny River through a series of fun art experiences. Make your own book of paintings of the Allegheny, create sculptures of the animals that live on and in the river, build and launch your own miniature watercraft and lots more! Joann Kielar, Instructor My World and Welcome to It! - Create a diorama, the miniature world of your dreams. Would you like to live in outer space, underground, in the future or in a cyber-world? Build your dream from paper, cardboard, recycled material and lots of other fun stuff. Joann Kielar, Instructor Puppet Theatre - Be a puppeteer, writer or director! Campers will write, create and perform a puppet show in which everyone has a role to play. This camp experience will include puppet-making, set design and performance. Joann Kielar, Instructor Ages 8-11 WildLife River Camp Morning - In no time campers will find themselves on the river in one of our canoes or kayaks. Using the Allegheny River and Sycamore Island as our classroom, campers will be looking for unique native wildlife, identifying non-native species and discussing some of the challenges native wildlife population faces. Also included is a field trip to our local Wildlife Center where campers learn about how the staff nurses injured wildlife back to life. Campers will get to meet the Center's resident's population of reptiles and mammals. During this camp there will also be lots of swimming off the dock and games in our park. Lucy Tuttle-Smith, Instructor WildLife Learn to Paddle & Row Afternoon - Campers will spend the afternoon learning the basic technique of kayaking, canoeing and rowing under the direction of a USRowing certified coach. There are plenty of camp counselors on hand to assist campers in and out of the boats as well as supervise swimming off the docks or an afternoon paddle in the camp's kayaks, canoes and recreational rowing boats. Lucy Tuttle-Smith, Instructor Ages 12-14 Spring Learn to Row - Camp will be on the water training (weather permitting) plus a fitness and weight training (CrossFit) component. By the end of the camp participants will be proficient in the basics of rowing and physically ready to enter into their school's program or join our competitive or recreational programs at SCRC.
