Hi, I'm trying to do a survey of tick prevalence in pittsburgh neighborhoods. i was wondering how commonly folks have found ticks in their back yards (or the park) or had a family member get a tick bite. If you know where the tick came from (park or yard, neighborhood of Pittsburgh), even better. If you've had no problems, that's also an important data point. Email me your answers and I'd be happy to send out a summary. Thanks, Jen -- Jennifer Mankoff, Associate Professor jmankoff@cs.cmu.edu NSH 2504A, x268-1295, Human Computer Interaction Institute, CMU http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~jmankoff
Hi, Thanks to everyone for your responses. I haven't found equiavelant mailing lists for other neighborhoods yet (if you know of one please tell me) but here's a summary of what I've found in this area: one thing is clear: I would have much better data if I'd actually put together a survey (oh well, this is a start :). Be aware that this data is likely biased toward people who had a problem. One person asked about a lyme disease vaccine. It doesn't exist anymore because it didn't work correctly. If you have questions about lyme disease that is a research area for me and I'd be happy to answer those i can or point people at resources. Most people told me about the last 1-3 years. A few mentioned 20-30 year periods. 15 people wrote that they'd had no issues with ticks 29 people wrote in who'd had some issue with ticks. 3 people reported ticks in other neighborhoods besides highland park. anonymized raw data including some specific comments attached. jen Jennifer Mankoff, Associate Professor jmankoff@cs.cmu.edu NSH 2504A, x268-1295, Human Computer Interaction Institute, CMU http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~jmankoff On Mon, Dec 6, 2010 at 10:40 AM, Jen Mankoff <jmankoff@cs.cmu.edu> wrote:

One other comment: a number of people had seen an increase in ticks in the last few years over past experience. jen Jennifer Mankoff, Associate Professor jmankoff@cs.cmu.edu NSH 2504A, x268-1295, Human Computer Interaction Institute, CMU http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~jmankoff On Wed, Dec 8, 2010 at 1:56 PM, Jen Mankoff <jmankoff@cs.cmu.edu> wrote:
