Photo story of HP roundabout/traffic circle hazards for blind pedestrians
Hi, folks, I had to shrink the photos to make this e-mail hopefully listserv size. I suggest you expand on your screen to really see them. jai Photo 1 shows Mia Boccella, a Highland Park resident who is legally blind. She and her guide dog are approaching the intersection with a roundabout/traffic circle at Callowhill and N. Euclid, preparing to cross. Photos 2 & 3 show Mia and her dog at the curb. This is where their training mandates that they stop in order to cross safely. Photo 4: While I was doing this photography, a PAT bus (driving carefully) came up the street and around the intersection. I took Photo 4 immediately after the bus had passed. This shows how far Mia and her dog had to back away from the curb to be safe while the bus passed. Photo 5 is a side view of how far from the curb Mia and her guide dog had to stand to be safe. N. Euclid is just not wide enough for these roundabouts/traffic circles to be safe for pedestrians. Even as a sighted pedestrian, I back up when a largish vehicle comes around the curve. These could be disastrous for a blind pedestrian. jai P.S. The lack of stop signs, which used to be at this intersection, also makes crossing more dangerous.
