[Highland Park] Outdoor Rat Problem
Hi there neighbors, We found a rat in our backyard over the weekend and last night, thanks to another's neighbor's help with a trap, we successfully trapped him alive. One of our neighbors who has lived in HP for over 40 years had never seen one here. We "live" in our backyard in the summer, so we could do without the rats. (Even though the one we caught is kind of cute and almost looks like a pet, we still don't want them around) We have children and a pet, so rat poison is out of the question. 1. Question: what do we do with the rat now that he is trapped? 2. Could there be more than just this one? ( I'm guessing yes...) 3. Is there a city office that handles these kinds of problems? 4. There is a property next to ours that has a large pile of brush in the backyard that has been there for about a year. Could this be the nesting place for the critters? Thanks for your help and suggestions. Lori and Fred Rongier Farragut St
Yuck! Call the environmental services at 412-255-2790. The heavy rains sometimes causes sewer rats to surface. The Public works number for Highland park is 412-665-3609. I would call and ask them to come out and look around. If there is dog feces left around from dog walkers this also will draw the rats.

** High Priority ** Lori/Fred The city of Pittsburgh has information on there website about rodent control. http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/pw/html/rodent_control.html These are some of the important points in rodent proofing your yard: 1. Eliminate Food Sources Remove defective refuse cans. Provide a sufficient amount of refuse cans. A 32 gallon container with a tight fitting lit is best. DO NOT LITTER. Be sure garbage in secure in container and not on the ground. Drain and wrap garbage before disposing. Remove pet food immediately and clean up animal waste. 2. Eliminate Water Keep all drains covered and secure. Make sure hoses are not leaking. Get rid of any standing water in yard. Fix any defective pipes or drains. 3. Eliminate Rodent Hiding Places Get rid of junk, lumber, old boxes, discarded appliances chairs or bedding on the ground or under porches. Remove abandoned vehicles.
