Local Businesses Owned by Those Impacted by the Refugee Ban
Do you know of any businesses in our community either owned by those from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and/or Yemen, or that employ those from these countries? Restaurants, service businesses, etc? We want to put our money where our mouths are. Thank you all for your wonderful replies. I was very encouraged that the requests to share this list were SIGNIFICANT. Let's all show those in our community how much we want them here. Here is what I've gathered: - Salem's Market and Grill <https://www.facebook.com/pages/Salems-Market-and-Grill/164372046933059?hc_location=ufi> in the Strip. They are terrific neighbours, very generous to local calls for donations (esp with the Lawrenceville Library). Mr. Abdul is an exceptionally kind and generous man. They are Libyan. - Labad's in the Strip is owned by Syrians. - Dr. Bruce Parker (dentist), in Squirrel Hill, has hired a refugee who is a Syrian dentist. - Naya - Syrian restaurant in Squirrel Hill. Yummy Middle-eastern food and friendly owner and staff. http://www.post-gazette.com/life/restaurant-reviews/2013/07/25/Savoring-Syri... - Alladin s eatery is owned by Christian Syrian. Some staff also are.... - Probably not as direct/recent (or impacted) as you are probably thinking, but a friend of mine owns his family clothing store in Carnegie, and he is of Syrian decent. Granted, his family came over to this area over 100 years ago (as the clothing store is over 100 years old at this point), but I think of him and how his grandfather wouldn't be given the same opportunity today if these rules were in effect. http://www.hannasclothing.com/ - I love Basha 21 in Squirrel Hill. https://www.yelp.com/biz/basha-21-squirrel-hill-2 - B52 owner Omar Abuhejleh <https://www.facebook.com/omar.abuhejleh.90?hc_location=ufi> is Palestinian. He also owns Allegro Hearth Bakery in Squirrel Hill. Both delicious businesses to support! - I know Lebanon is not on the list, but Pita Land on Brookline Blvd is owned by a Lebanese family, and makes the most *amazing* middle eastern foods! You would be supporting the immigrant community, even if you are not necessarily impacting folks who are currently on the Bad List (as it were)... - I highly recommend http://www.salimsfoods.com/ <http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.salimsfoods.com%2F&h=ATMvJAICBwXSpTTzaVaXVvy8_iFrFRI0WU2CHraBtT9JD01Lj5O333jB6N837ZLnK6WCtXSE6PtCd8L7Nhoo_xF571LnmZu74GggP5eW8zSJ4CUc8eSmB-7avv6wURKXJoRc588IVQ>! We love their grape leaves, Baba Ghanough, felafel sandwiches and their friendly staff! The man I have spoken to most frequently there is from Syria. - Madonnas Mediterranean <https://www.facebook.com/sea.bensimon?hc_location=ufi> down town 408 Smithfield Street is homemade and delicious. A Syrian family owns and operates it. - The dry cleaners on Northumberland in Sq. Hill. I believe the owners are from Iran.
