[Highland Park] Bus Route Changes - Eliminate direct access to WPAGH or Chilrens Hosp
To all, ( Note - links to contact info and pdfs containing details about this email can be found at the bottom of the page ) In last months listserve thread a few residents expressed concern about proposed bus route changes. One very significant detail that sticks out to me is the fact that neither of the 2 proposed "concepts" provide direct access to either West Penn Allegheny General Hospital or Childrens Hospital ( I'm guessing a few thousand jobs/employees ). Highland park residents can currently bord busses that pass ( via Friendship Avenue ) within 1 to 3 blocks of both of these hospitals. They can access these busses at numerous points along Highland and Negley Aves. This is convenient for almost all of highland park. If either of the proposed concepts go into full effect ( there are 2 to chose from ), only the 77g or ( concept2 ) 77f will travel Friendship avenue. These routes will run from Morningside or Stanton Heights and will only touch the Negley/Stanton corner of Highland park. Highland park residents that work at either institution, prospective tennants, and prospective home buyers will have to either 1. walk to the corner of Negley and Stanton ( a 1 to 2 mile hike for large portions of highland park ) or 2. take a route that includes a transfer in order to access either of these hospitals that are only 2 to 3 miles from various portions of highland park. Either case is much less convenient if you are an employee of WPAGH or Childrens and a much harder sell to prospective tennants and homebuyers that work at either hospital. Lastly - it is difficult to believe that it is practical or efficient to service such a significant and heavily populated route ( the above descibed stretch of Friendship Ave ) with one route ( 77f or 77g ). While the public period comment is over - I've left messages and will continue to contact or attempt to contact folk at the port authority ( transit development plan - see link at the bottom of this page ) If anyone is taking action or knows of a better course of action please let me know.
